Personal Locator Beacons Approved

The FCC has approved the purchase and use of Personal Emergency Locator Beacons after July 1, 2003. The FCC has finally approved the sale of 406 MHz Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) in the U.S. Both the U.S. Air Force and the FCC deserve credit for the dubious distinction of holding up PLB approval for the past few years, but this inertia has at last been overcome.

Come July 1, 2003, it will be legal to purchase a 406 MHz PLB in the U.S., a proven lifesaving device that's been available elsewhere in the world for many years.

For many years, pilots and mariners alike have had these devices, yet each year many hikers and campers go lost and missing. With one of these devices, finding such a person becomes much easier. PLB's should be pocket sized and weigh about 1 pound with a retail price some where near $500.00.
